Cornerstone of Success

From Italy to South Australia, Italia Ceramics celebrates 50 years of quality and style.

More than half a century ago, Italia Ceramics founder Pasquale Vozzo migrated to Australia with a passion for the beauty and craftsmanship of Italian ceramic tiles and natural stone.

In those early days, builders, interior designers, architects and home renovators struggled to access the unique style and quality found in imported Italian tiles, from traditional terracotta to the intricate patterns taking shape in geometric tiles.

After witnessing a gap in the South Australian market, Pasquale laid the foundation for a long future of unmatched style and quality in 1973. Today, the Vozzo family remains at the forefront of importing and supplying on-trend Italian floor and wall tiles and stone to Adelaide’s building industry and home renovators.

Along with Italia Ceramics’ premium display housed at its award-winning Glynde showroom, the family’s quality products are featured proudly across the state, from Adelaide International Airport’s Ice Snow terrazzo quartz stone tile flooring to Her Majesty’s Theatre’s stunning recent refit.

Italia Ceramics sourced and supplied custom laser cut porcelain floor tiles and Italia stone wall tiles for the theatre’s main dress circle foyer, bathrooms and three-multi-level bars.

Just as its founding father turned dreams into reality all those years ago, today Italia Ceramics’ talented in-house interior designers turn ideas into prosperous projects. They listen carefully to understand your vision, no matter your budget.

With constantly evolving trends and designs over the five decades, one thing has not changed: Italia Ceramics’ bespoke collection is versatile and made-to-last, for 50 years and more to come.

Get That Pre-Event Glow

Woman receiving HydraFacial treatment.

The silly season can wreak havoc on our skin. Taking steps to treat your pores to a little TLC before an event can make a world of difference – but forget regular facials. Enter the celebrity treatment of the moment – the HydraFacial. We asked Laser Hair Removal at The Bay and On Unley to explain the hype.

Tell us what a HydraFacial involves and how it’s different from other facials.

The HydraFacial is a multi-step facial treatment that combines cleansing, exfoliation, extraction, hydration, and antioxidant protection. Unlike regular facials, which often focus on one or two aspects of skincare, the HydraFacial uses a patented technology that addresses multiple concerns simultaneously. It’s unique in its ability to deeply cleanse, extract impurities, and deliver potent serums for hydration and protection in one session. It really does give skin an incredible glow and we regularly recommend the treatment for clients who are preparing for a special event.

How should I prep my skin before treatment?

To prepare for a HydraFacial, it’s recommended to maintain a consistent skincare routine. Avoid using harsh exfoliants or undergoing other facial treatments, such as chemical peels, in the week leading up to your HydraFacial. Ensure your skin is clean and free from make-up or lotions before the session for optimal results.

What skincare issues does the HydraFacial address?

The HydraFacial is versatile and can address various skincare needs, including fine lines and wrinkles, elasticity and firmness, skin tone evenness, texture, brown spots, congested pores, and enlarged pores. Its customisable nature allows professionals to tailor the treatment to meet individual skin concerns.

Is there any downtime or pain involved?

The HydraFacial is known for its gentle and non-invasive nature. Typically, there’s no downtime associated with the treatment, and most individuals experience minimal discomfort. It’s often described as a soothing and relaxing experience without pain or significant irritation. After the session, some individuals might have a slight pinkish hue on the skin, which generally subsides within a few hours.

How long do the results last?

Results from a HydraFacial can vary from person-to-person. Many notice an immediate improvement in skin texture and appearance. With regular sessions and proper skincare maintenance, the effects of a HydraFacial can last for several weeks. However, consistent sessions are recommended for sustained results as part of a comprehensive skincare regime.

Skip Breakfast to Support Hungry SA Kids

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but many underprivileged kids have little choice but to start their day on an empty stomach.

South Australian not-for-profit organisation, KickStart for Kids’ annual ‘No Breakfast, Breakfast’ returns on Friday, December 8 at the Hilton Adelaide, serving guests nothing but food for thought.

The ‘No Breakfast, Breakfast’, this year emceed by SAFM’s Rebecca Morse, gives people the opportunity to start their day by voluntarily skipping breakfast to support thousands of hungry South Australian kids, a reality that many face every day.

KickStart for Kids is a South Australian not-for-profit organisation that provides a school breakfast program for underprivileged kids who often start their day on an empty stomach.

The program serves about 60,000 breakfasts per week in more than 360 South Australian schools.

KickStart for Kids founder, Ian Steel OAM, says the ‘No Breakfast, Breakfast’ is one of the organisation’s
signature annual fundraising events and plays a key role in the success of their programs throughout the year.

“We are calling on the Adelaide community, particularly those who spend their day in the CBD, to join us in support of this incredibly worthwhile cause,” he says.

Guests may choose to indulge in breakfast after the event or continue their day on an empty stomach and experience this effect on their mental and physical strength.

“Most people don’t realise how lucky they are to wake up every morning and thoughtlessly choose what they want for breakfast from a stocked fridge or pantry,” Ian says.

“The No Breakfast, Breakfast puts things into perspective and helps guests understand their privilege, ultimately giving them a new lease of gratitude to take away with them after raising funds for a cause that needs it.”

Tickets are $65 for a single ticket or $660 for a table of 10 with all proceeds going towards purchasing breakfasts for the KickStart for Kids Breakfast Program.

Big Picture Thinking

Urban Habitats approach every home collaboratively and holistically. Here’s why.

Designing and building a home requires a lot of decision making and the ability to prioritise wants and needs. There are a lot of stages in the process and many elements within each stage, which is challenging to navigate without proper guidance.

Architectural design, build cost estimating, interior design, building, and landscaping – this is the breadth of services offered by Urban Habitats (they also undertake their own developments). Key to their success is their ability to leverage off of their experienced team; the communication between the different operators ensuring a clear understanding of design and build. For clients, this is a valuable point of difference. Having all of this expertise under the one roof means that details can be debated, problems can be identified, and opportunities can be maximised early in the design phase – this collaboration often achieving outstanding results.

A recent Urban Habitats project on Albert Street in Goodwood is a good example of this – in this build, a concrete plinth under the fireplace, which transitions into the first two stairs that lead to the upper level, was a thoughtfully considered design detail that presented construction challenges.

Consultation between architect and builder was paramount to the success of this design aspect, together with holistic, whole project thinking. The conversations start early, ensuring that all parties are across every aspect of the build. Central to this is detailed construction drawings.

When a meticulously deliberated design starts becoming a reality onsite, it is paramount that everyone is across the detail. Comprehensive drawings and clear communications can also save time – and money – making the delivery of the home smoother. This high level of communication and vision of the end-goal not only offers potential time and cost savings, it also means than any variations to the design can be dealt with directly.

Working with the original architect for the duration of the build also ensures the original design intent is delivered as envisioned. The Albert Street build had an 11-month construction phase – fastidiously detailed construction drawings and consistent communication between the architect, interior designer, estimator/contract administration, and project manager meant this home was built on time and on budget.

Budget and cost decisions for this particular home took into account the build objective, which was to deliver a high-quality home with a point of difference, on a compact site. Areas of spend were prioritised in line with this, and as a result the home includes many stand out features, such as a central courtyard, a cellar, polished concrete flooring, three-metre-high ceilings at ground level, perforated metal screening and an open staircase.

Having a clear objective from the outset, and the support of a design studio and cost estimating team, meant that costs could be determined ahead of time and efficient building strategies utilised to ensure that wow-factor elements could be included without blowing the budget.

Well-considered design, comprehensive communication, and a team that is concentrated on delivering the best build outcome for clients is at the core of Urban Habitats’ holistic design and construct approach.

Challenges are addressed head-on as a project team and the design objective is considered and upheld throughout the course of construction. Details are shared and opportunities are maximised by the pooling together of expertise and experience; a collaborative approach that instils confidence and facilitates building success.
