SA’s Best Pizzerias

To celebrate World Pizza Day on February 9, we’ve handpicked some of our favourite South Australian pizzerias.

1. Bandit Pizza and Wine

Cosy Hyde Park pizzeria and arrosticini (Italian skewers) bar, Bandit Pizza and Wine, places a spotlight on open-fire cooking. Opened last November, the pizzeria is the sibling of popular Prospect haunt Anchovy Bandit, with the pizza pies crafted from 72-hour fermented Neapolitan dough (it’s their secret to achieving irresistibly puffy edges!) Infusing hip-hop tunes with Bandit Pizza and Wine’s commitment to seasonal produce and Italian-inspired flavours, our top pizza pick is the classic margherita but with the addition of salami. Pair your pizza with a glass of wine or a delicious cocktail!

2. Chicco Palms

Step into the sun-soaked realm of Chicco Palms, a California-inspired pizza haven exuding a laid-back Palm Springs vibe in Brooklyn Park. The menu, a fusion of Roman-style pizzas and Italo-American delights, boasts staples like spaghetti and meatballs, gnocchi pomodoro, and home-baked panini.

Offering old-school hospitality dining and takeaway, the pizza is thin and crispy.

Aside from the pizza, the drinks selection features an exclusively Italian and South Australia list.

3. Pizzateca

McLaren Vale’s family-favourite pizzeria, Pizzateca, prides itself on Italy’s age-old techniques passed down through generations of the Mitolo family. It starts with the joint’s sugo (sauce), meticulously crafted by the hands of the family, featuring South Australian, Virginia-grown Roma tomatoes.

Authenticity defines Pizzateca’s Neapolitan-style pizza – thin with a soft, airy crust, handcrafted in the traditional way without rolling pins. Fired in a wood oven, crafted by the renowned Stefano Ferrara in Napoli, our menu pick is the Diablo with salami, dried chilli flakes, asiago cheese and house made chilli honey for a sweet and spicy hit to summer. And of course, don’t leave without the customary photo opportunity in front of the pizzeria’s iconic pink and teal wall.

4. Pizza Meccanica

Located in an old service station and garage within Bowden’s burgeoning neighbourhood, Pizza Meccanica beckons diners with the irresistible scent of wood-oven pizza. The restaurant prides itself on authenticity, crafting Napolitan pizzas using a wood oven imported from Italy.

Unlike menus crowded with extravagant choices, you won’t encounter a super supreme with 20 toppings or a ham and pineapple pizza here. Instead, diners are treated to meticulously crafted pizzas showcasing the finest market-fresh ingredients. A standout is the Salsiccia e Friarielli, featuring a wood-fired base topped with house-made pork sausage, Friarelli (a flavourful Italian leafy green), mozzarella, and delicious white sauce.

5. Antica Pizzeria

Embracing a communal dining concept, the menu here features enticing antipasto entrees and the iconic one-metre pizza. Share the joy with your companions as you explore three distinct toppings.

Classic choices like margherita and salami are complemented by innovative options featuring creamy white sauce. Indulge in the Quattro Formaggi, a blend of four cheeses, or savour the Funghi pizza, scattered with porcini mushrooms, sauteed mushrooms and truffle paste.

For those with a sweet tooth, finish your feast with a tempting tiramisu or a generous one metre serving of Nutella calzone.

Best of all? You can Antica Pizzeria’s perfection in both Hyde Park and Morphett Street in Adelaide’s CBD.
