Are You Being Lasered By A Qualified Nurse?

The questions you should ask laser hair removal clinics.

Winter is looming, making it the best time for laser hair removal as your skin is less likely to be exposed to the sun. But there are a few things to consider to ensure your treatment goes as safely and smoothly as possible.

Laser Hair Removal at The Bay & On Unley fills us in on how to avoid a close shave with a dodgy clinic.

1. What training and qualifications does your staff have?

Pick a clinic led by qualified nurses rather than beauty therapists. Here at Laser Hair Removal at The Bay & On Unley, all our clients are treated by qualified nurses. We spend three months training our nursing staff to ensure they’re more than confident in safely addressing your unwanted hair needs.

In South Australia, anybody can open a laser hair removal clinic, which is frightening as high-grade laser equipment can cause a lot of damage and problems if they’re not used by staff who are adequately trained.

2. Do you provide a thorough consultation?

Make sure the clinic assesses your skin type and hair colour. There are many other assessments that should be made, including medical history and medication that may affect the treatment and results. Laser Hair Removal at The Bay & On Unley provide a complementary initial consultation where they’ll run through a thorough explanation of the service and answer any questions you have. This is to ensure the client is comfortable with the process and feels safe.

3. How many clients have you treated?

Enquire about how many clients the clinic has treated, as this might give you an idea of how popular and trusted they are. The best way to determine this is through word-of-mouth; ask your friends and family for a recommendation to a reputable clinic.

4. What equipment do you use?

Ask the clinic about the type of laser they use. Intense pulsed light (IPL) is frequently advertised as a laser, but this isn’t the case. IPL is not a laser; instead, find a clinic that uses a Class 4 Medical Laser, which achieves incredible results compared to IPL.

5. What results can I expect from the treatment?

A trick to watch out for is if the clinic offers permanent hair removal. Take note: it’s simply not possible to guarantee “permanent hair removal”; only permanent reduction can be achieved. Although the procedure is often touted as a form of permanent hair removal, laser treatment only reduces the number of unwanted hairs in a given area. It doesn’t get rid of unwanted hairs completely.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is an exfoliation treatment and procedure that smoothens, tightens and brightens your skin complexion, removing dry skin and rough texture from your face. During the treatment, a sterile surgical blade gently removes the top layer of skin, shaving away dead skin cells and the dreaded ‘peach fuzz’. It’s recommended clients receive dermaplaning monthly.

Who should have it?

Dermaplaning is effective for those who have acne scarring, an uneven skin tone or experience dry skin. It’s also believed to help aging skin as it helps remove the build-up of dead skin cells, which increase with age.

What to expect

Dermaplaning takes less than 45 minutes to complete and is a painless treatment. A combination of deep cleansing, dermaplaning exfoliation and a post-treatment enzyme peel is used to remove remaining dead skin cells. Dermaplaning is available at both the Glenelg and Unley clinics and costs $150.

What is a HydraFacial?

A HydraFacial is the best gift you can give your skin, the treatment is a unique, non-invasive facial that boosts your beauty instantly. The treatment cleanses, exfoliates and hydrates through a patented spiral tip that clears pores and releases serums co-currently through a painless suction. A HydraFacial delivers a vortex fusion of antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid performed on the face, neck or décolletage.

Who should have it?

A HydraFacial doesn’t discriminate – with the treatment perfect for all skin types, textures and ages. Whether you want to address fine lines, sagging skin, enlarged pores, texture troubles or vibrancy, HydraFacial targets all areas of concern with its nifty all-in-one approach.

What to expect

A HydraFacial takes less than an hour, and the results are immediate. Leave the skincare clinic feeling your best, with the treatment easy to squeeze into any busy schedule. It’s recommended clients receive a HydraFacial once a month. The treatment feels like a cool brush moving across your skin, with results sometimes lasting over seven days. HydraFacials are only on offer at the Glenelg clinic.

Face – $170
Face + Neck – $195
Face + Neck + Decolletage – $220

Treatment to Try

We sent influencer Lucinda Nicholas for a skin pick-me-up at Laser Hair Removal at the Bay.

“When I arrived at Laser Hair Removal I was met by Veronica, the owner and a skilled skin professional with 20 years’ experience as a HydraFacial consultant.

We started with a consult, where Veronica asked me a range of questions relating to my skin, including my skin history, the products that I currently use (morning and night) and any skin concerns I had. She also walked me through every step of the HydraFacial treatment so I knew what to expect throughout the service.

It was now time to get started. Veronica began by double cleansing my face to take off my make-up and to ensure my skin was clean before starting the treatment. She then used a patented spiral tip to exfoliate the skin and clear all of the blocked pores. This step was completely painless and felt so soothing on the skin.

Veronica highlighted the importance of not forgetting your neck and décolletage when it comes to skincare. My mum always reminded me of this, so I’ve known how essential this is since I was a young girl. I was pleased to hear that Veronica included these areas in her services. Once my pores were clean, Veronica began to infuse my skin with a Vortex Fusion, including antioxidants, peptides and hyaluronic acid to help hydrate the skin.

Veronica talked me through each step of the treatment, including the tools and products she used. It made me feel so comfortable and confident that I was in good hands, especially as this was the first time that I’d had a HydraFacial. I also felt well-informed about how to treat my skin post-treatment and improve it in the future.

By the end of the treatment, my skin had an instant glow and felt so soft and hydrated. I could see the difference in my pores and how much they had reduced in appearance. There was no downtime, so I could continue my day as usual.

It’s now been one week post-treatment, and I am delighted with the results. I feel more confident going make-up-free and when I do wear make-up it sits on my skin much nicer than it did before. This experience really has reaffirmed to me how important it is to see a skin care professional such as Veronica regularly.”
