Award-winning interior designer Bre Tarca believes that exceptional spaces elevate the everyday. We took a look around her latest project, a characterful bungalow in Colonel Light Gardens

When did you become involved in this project?

I was involved from the beginning. I initially received a website enquiry from the clients saying, ‘We have a house in Colonel Light Gardens that has an old 80s/90s extension. It’s not great, so we’d like to gut the extension and start again.’

What was the brief for the design?

The brief was centred around a hardworking family home, with a kitchen that offered generous bench space and storage, and a new family bathroom and combined laundry/bathroom.

A key aim was also to improve the flow between the existing spaces. Relocating the kitchen into the previously underutilised dining room allowed it to sit beneath a new window overlooking the backyard, where entertaining and play takes place.

How did a theme for the interior emerge?

The clients were drawn to a scheme that felt warm and calm, with lots of neutral tones. The palette developed to include durable, practical materials, like timber flooring, Grande Ceppo tiles, walnut-coloured joinery and stainless-steel benchtops. The intention was a cohesive but practical feel for a busy family.

Who else was involved in the project?

I worked closely with Bloom Built throughout the project. My role
covered interior and joinery design as well as project management, so I worked alongside the builder to ensure everything was successfully translated on site.

How long did the process take?

The overall design and renovation process was completed in nine months; the on-site renovation took approximately five months.

What do you love most about this project?

I love how much it achieved without dramatically increasing the footprint. Thoughtful planning can completely change the way a home feels and functions. Relocating spaces, removing a wall and rethinking the layout created a much stronger family hub. Every square metre has its job: the custom dining banquette incorporates craft and wine storage, and a concealed space in the linen cupboard houses the family’s robovac, Cleanie Weanie!

Did your background in interior joinery play into the design?

Absolutely! That’s a huge part of how I approach a project. For this project, that meant maximising every storage opportunity: that included dual pantries, an appliance nook, vertical tray storage and integrated appliances. The same goes for the bathrooms – they incorporated extensive custom storage as well. With less clutter out in the open, the result is a home that feels larger, lighter and much more connected.
