Off to the Races with Kate Freebairn

With the races approaching faster than the horses set to race, the time crunch to find that perfect outfit is becoming realer by the minute. To provide some much need inspiration, South Australian Style spoke to Network 10’s Races Fashion and Entertainment Co-Host, Kate Freebairn.

What are the biggest trends that you’re expecting to see this racing season?

Coming out of COVID restrictions, this year’s Carnival is a big celebration and I expect the fashion to reflect that. We’ll be seeing lots of bold, bright, block colours and balloon sleeves. I’m a big fan for tailored suits and I think they’ll be big this year.

When it comes to headwear – a classic hat is always beautiful but this year headbands are the new fascinators. They’re fresh and fun and so easy to wear.

What are the fashion faux pas of the races?

Elegant is always best for a day at the races. Don’t go too short with your dress, too low with your neckline, or show too much skin. This season, cut-outs are everywhere but they’re on the banned list at the races in Sydney and Melbourne. Although Adelaide’s race days are generally a little more casual, it might be best to err on the side of caution.

This goes without saying – the ultimate faux pas is taking off your shoes. You’ll have big regrets the next day!

With that being said, what’s a full-proof races outfit?

For me, it’s a tailored suit with a classic wide brimmed hat. It’s classy, flattering and comfortable to wear all day. Add a statement pair of shoes and a bag and you’re set.

So…what will you be wearing?

I’m hosting the TV coverage on all four days of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, so I’ve mixed it up. I’m usually a minimalist but we’ve pushed the boundaries for Cup Day! I’ve teamed up with an incredible designer, who is creating something amazing for me. It’s bright, bold and will be a lot of fun to wear.

In terms of entertainment, what’s on offer this season?

You can catch the broadcast of the Melbourne Cup Carnival on Network 10 and we’ve got plenty in store for people watching at home or on the big screens at events across the country.

I’m teaming with up with Rob Mills to host the fashion and entertainment and as part of that we’re featuring the best dressed racegoers from across the country for Myer’s Fashions on Your Front Lawn. There were some great entries from SA too, so I’m looking forward to chatting to some of the entrants and seeing how our locals go.

Now, I hear you have some exciting news to share…

I’m having a baby! It’s a little girl and my partner, Nick and I couldn’t be happier. I’m almost halfway, so pregnancy has made dressing for the Carnival a little more challenging this year but it will be nice to see the bump on the screen! I’m due at the end of March and can’t wait.

Be sure to catch all the racing coverage on Network 10 this racing season.
