Inner City Dining: Jack & Jill’s

We all know how the nursery rhyme goes, but Jack & Jill’s Bar and Restaurant is no child’s play.

Jack & Jill’s quietly opened in October of 2019 in the former Old Friend site on Pirie Street. After a tough start to 2020, the venue joins a flock of bar and restaurants welcoming sophisticated night life back to the Pirie Street precinct.

The renovated street-level restaurant is spacious with a warm fit-out – think timber, crushed velvet and exposed lighting. It’s chic without being fussy.

During the warmer months, the front bifold doors extend out welcoming street diners into a porch-like dining space.

Designed for large groups to gather and share, the modern Australian menu offers a generous selection of smaller and larger plates.

The menu draws from a range of global influences, from Korean (sticky fried chicken and crunchy slaw) to Middle Eastern (spiced lamb shoulder with pearl couscous) and Sri Lankan (barramundi curry and coconut rice). There’s plenty of vegetarian options available too – try the whole roasted cauliflower with radish, beetroot and warm buttermilk dressing.

If there’s room for more, don’t go past a serve of the sweet potato doughnuts and sour cream ice cream or the local cheese plate.

After dinner, groups are encouraged to travel down the ‘hill’ to the Basement Bar. Lowly lit yet full of life, the after-hours bar serves innovative cocktails and a delightful local wine list of seasonal varieties from the Barossa to the Adelaide Hills wine regions.

Intimate without feeling small, the space welcomes local music acts each month and a host of resident DJs every weekend. Find the September line-up here.

Jack & Jill’s is open Tuesday – Friday, 12pm – Late and Saturday 6pm – Late. Basement Bar is open Friday and Saturday nights only.
