Life-Changing Meals With The Longest Table

This August, The Hospital Research Foundation Group invites you to host a meal to raise funds for cancer research

Sharing a meal with the people you love is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Company and food sustain us in more ways than one, and until the end of this month, a meal with friends, family or coworkers can help provide funds for cancer research.

Over 60 years ago, The Hospital Research Foundation Group was founded to provide life-changing medical research, improved hospital care and support services for communities across Australia.

The Longest Table is their big-hearted answer to typical fundraising, a way for anyone to get involved and support the fight for better diagnosis, improved treatments and cures for cancer.

The official day to host a Longest Table event is Friday the 28th of August, but you can host any time that suits from now until Monday the 31st of August. If you’re ready to get involved, here’s a run-down of what you need to know.

Register to host

Choose a time and place to host your meal, be it your home, a nearby park, a local venue or even your workplace’s boardroom. After you’ve registered on The Longest Table’s website, you’ll be sent a hosting pack with all the resources you need to get started.

Set the table

While this event has been dubbed The Longest Table, in practice, the table itself can be as small as a side table and as unconventional as an upturned milk crate. The point is to share a meal with the people in your life, and that can be done in any way you like, such as a:

Casual pizza and board game night

Bake-off with your colleagues

Dressed-up lunch at your favourite restaurant

Murder mystery dinner party

Backyard barbecue

Sunday morning pastries with the girls

Mid-week morning tea

Picnic in the park

Dine and donate

Time to get others involved! Invite your friends, family, colleagues or anyone else from the community to your event and start raising funds. If someone can’t make it but still wants to lend their support, encourage them to make a donation to your online fundraising page. Equally, if you can’t host an event this time around, sponsor someone else’s table, be it a mate’s or a stranger’s.

Whether you’re honouring a loved one lost to cancer, supporting someone currently facing it or just passionate about helping to find a cure, you can share your motivation for hosting a Longest Table event on social media. Pay their website or Instagram a visit for everything you’ll need to get started.
