What to wear: The Australian Ballet’s ‘The Sleeping Beauty’

The Sleeping Beauty

Opulence, elegance, and a hint of magic – this week, The Australian Ballet is set to return to the stage with their classic and timeless rendition of the world-famous The Sleeping Beauty.

With the enchanting performance marking the 10th anniversary of David McAllister’s breathtaking debut, we’re preparing to be once again swept away by stunning costume designs, spellbinding artistry, and Tchaikovsky scores. For those wanting to pay a stylish homage to the enigmatic and enthralling revival, take a leaf out of our book (or should we say, our wardrobes?)

AN ODE TO THE CLASSICS

Sophisticated silhouettes with a delicate edge will be taking centre stage this week. Amongst the anticipated hum of ballet-goers at The Festival Theatre, you’ll be sure to turn a head or two with a timeless maxi dress that speaks to this era’s cool girl: bold, stylish, and effortlessly curated. Think earthy tones, clean cut (tank) necklines, and fabrics that create a seamless interplay of light and dark, form and flow. Style the look with a ruched leather kitten heel, a sleek functional shoulder bag, and an oversized blazer. As a small nod to the grandiose production, team your look with a low slick back bun. And if that’s not your style, add dimension with a textured wavy up-do, letting a few small strands hang loosely around your face.

  1. Carter Baguette, $479, Oroton; 2. Visions Lace Frill Dress, $360 Third Form; 3. Camilla Moon Shoulder Bag, $249, Oxford; 4. Sylvie Kitten Heels, $59.95, Witchery; 5. Robbie Sequin Maxi Dress, $159, VRG GRL; 6. Ornella Blazer, $289, Henne

THE BOLD AND THE BALLET

If your fashion camp sits a little closer to daring and audacious, ditch the dress, and keep the rest. Don your oversized blazer with a tailored shirt, knee-high boots, and statement accessories. From sterling silver ring stacks to a pastel pin-striped tie – let your additions do the talking. Balance the tailored structure of the blazer with a left-of-centre piece and an unexpected flourish – think subtly embellished tights or an eye-catching handbag that subverts the sophisticated silhouette. The goal is tension: polished, but provoking, distinguished, but disobedient.
