5 Minutes with Dr Rahma Targett

Skin expert Dr Rahma Targett from Advanced Cosmetic Medicine uses years of experience as a medical practitioner and United Nations deputy chief medical officer to help patients achieve their best ‘natural’ skin. Here are some of her top tips.

don’t over-do it

I advocate natural results – that is to enhance without overdoing it. I care about my patients’ wellbeing and I understand that over-treating the skin is not healthy anatomically or physiologically.

wear sunscreen

A common misconception is that you don’t need to wear sunscreen if it’s a cloudy day. You should wear sunscreen every day, even on a cloudy day or when you’re just lounging around. If you plan to sunbathe, lather your skin in sunscreen. I see teenagers lying on the beach without sunscreen to achieve that perfect tan. It’s dangerous to the skin and wrinkles could appear earlier.

prevention is better than a cure

Getting regular skin treatments before you start seeing wrinkles is completely advisable and safe. Again, just don’t overdo it and make sure to go to a reputable cosmetic physician.

less is more

Cosmetic medicine is about enhancing your beauty and recreating the physiological aspect of your skin at a certain age. For example, if you do too many injectables on your forehead for many, many years, the muscles will get weaker and flatter and the skin can appear thinner and looser. The sad part is, as your muscles become weaker, they start to recruit surrounding muscles. So instead of achieving a more natural result, the outcome makes the patient look unnatural and aged.

anti-ageing micro treatments are a thing

Collagen-stimulating laser genesis and thread lift work together to achieve the best results, and they’re non-invasive. The thread lift works to lift or reposition and addresses skin problems such as droopy skin. It’s a facelift without the surgery to some extent. I also do nose thread lift to improve the height and shape of the nose. Collagen-stimulating laser such as laser genesis helps restore firmness, minimise pores, improve fine lines and achieve a clearer complexion.

products you should own

For me it’s pore refining scrub, moisturiser, Vitamin C, eye cream and sunscreen – during summer I also include pigmentation serum.
