This August, the designer furniture destination opens its expansive showroom to host 20 impressive works from the Adelaide sculptor
For anyone seeking designer furniture in Adelaide, most searches will inevitably lead them to Coco Republic’s showroom in Burnside Village. The expansive space showcases a curated selection of indoor and outdoor furniture, home décor, lighting and made-to-order fabrics. This August, it will also play host to a solo exhibition from acclaimed Adelaide sculptor, Peter Syndicas.
“We’re delighted to welcome Peter’s work into our store this August as part of the SALA Festival,” says Coco Republic Showroom Manager Hayley Gogan. Life Forms features 20 works, all available for purchase, which will be on display in the showroom throughout the month. Visitors can view pieces wrought in Syndicas’ signature materials of bronze, steel and stone, as well as works from his stromatolite-inspired series.
Syndicas has a longstanding to Burnside Village; his 11-metre public sculpture Celestial Lifeform hangs as a centre landmark in its central atrium. Coco Republic’s showroom looks directly onto the installation from its Level 1 vantage, making the partnership a natural fit.
Hayley says that the exhibition reflects Coco Republic’s broader approach to styling and design. “At Coco Republic, curating beautiful artwork alongside luxury furniture and interiors is central to how we design a space,” she says, “and hosting Peter’s SALA show lets us share that philosophy with our community.”
Syndicas forewent institutional training, instead developing his techniques through trial and error. He exhibited publicly for the first time in 2005, as a finalist in that year’s Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize; he would go on to be a finalist four successive times. Following the first accolade, he refined his skills in bronze under the mentorship of Silvio Apponyi.
Syndicas’ distinctive style sees him source twigs that resemble the human form, before magnifying and casting them in bronze, steel and stone. His sculptures present a dichotomy between the materials’ organic origin and fragility, and the end results’ bold, striking presence.
Life Forms is on display in the Coco Republic showroom at Burnside Village from the 1st to the 31st of August.
