Luxury Calls

Due to open in May 2026, Umi Resort is a reflection of Uluwatu’s spirit: all unfiltered beauty, enduring tranquillity and a refined outlook on what it truly means to escape

What does a luxury getaway look like in 2026? For Bali’s latest five-star resort Umi, it’s a balance of restoration and refinement. Taking shape on a dramatic cliffside forest with private beach access, this 92-room resort is a reason to book an escape to Bali’s wellness capital, Uluwatu, next year. Here’s everything to expect from Umi’s May 2026 opening.

Location, Location

A sign of a truly thoughtful resort is its synergy with the land on which it resides. Umi borrows its name from the Japanese word for ‘sea’ – a nod to the famed, rugged coastline Uluwatu derives its reputation from. However, the resort’s connection to the region runs deeper than its namesake. Umi’s dramatic U-shaped design mirrors that of the sea caves found at the neighbouring Suluban Beach; its cascading, three-tiered infinity pool follows the curvature of the land; and the building’s clean lines are aesthetically wrapped with lush greenery to mimic the natural grandeur of Uluwatu’s iconic cliffs.

The blueprint of the Australian-owned resort is mapped out in 92 thoughtfully-designed rooms with balconies, plus seven private luxury villas, all hemmed by sprawling garden surrounds and pool views. Low-impact construction methods and recyclable materials have been used throughout the build of Umi, including the repurposed, ethically-sourced high-qualityIndonesian teak featured in the custom furniture. This unique fusion of luxury and sustainability is the result of a collaboration between co-founder Danil Flehan, Imsersif Architecture and Vojtek Morsztyn Studio, with the team at Umira Sinergi Global behind the impeccable build of this world-class resort.

Beyond this, Umi’s proximity to the best of Uluwatu gives the new resort an unrivalled edge. It is situated on the southwestern tip of Bali’s Bukit Peninsula –a cape covered in a smattering of clifftop spas, beach clubs and renowned restaurants. This buzzing urbanity is balanced by the resort’s accessibility to its aesthetic muses: Suluban and Uluwatu Beach, both of which are just a mere 200 metres from Umi’s spectacular setting. And if you need any more convincing, the world famous waves found at Padang Padang, Bingin and Dreamland are also only a short ride away. “Umi is surrounded by more than 1500 metres of cascading gardens that wrap the resort on every level, along with tranquil infinity pools that allow nature to gently soften the senses. The experience is serene, grounding, and quietly elegant, the kind of feeling that stays with you long after you leave,” says owner and Australian entrepreneur Danil Flehan.

Refined R&R

From sunup to sundown, ease and tranquillity are the MO of Umi. The resort is designed to be a sanctuary; a space that allows guests to hit pause from the pace of everyday. “Umi raises the bar by redefining what luxury in Uluwatu should truly feel like. Every space has been crafted with intention, design-led interiors, calming natural materials, and a sense of harmony that flows through the entire resort. But what sets Umi apart is the personalised, intuitive service. It’s the kind of hospitality that understands what guests need before they even ask. We combine elevated comfort with curated, meaningful experiences, creating an atmosphere of refined simplicity and modern tranquillity,” says Danil. Time here is best spent hopping between the hot and cold plunge pools or taking advantage of the on-site Spa, which boasts over 40 treatments that are inspired by Japanese healing practices and rooted in rejuvenation.

However, a restorative energy ripples throughout every aspect of Umi, including its resort restaurant. Executive Chef Michael McGairy leads the team here, bringing his decades of culinary experience – including several years spent as a private chef at the three-Michelin Star Lizard Island resort – to the fresh-focused fare. Bali’s melting pot of cultural flavour will be reflected throughout the courses served here – a considered nod to the Indonesian, modern Australian, Japanese and Middle Eastern influences undulating throughout Uluwatu.

And while the five-star amenities are adult-geared, Umi doesn’t discriminate – the resort has its own Kids Club and Nanny service. Parents can clock off and unwind poolside while the host of professionals dial up the fun for your little ones. Who says luxurious holidays can’t be child friendly?
