Empowering students to lead with integrity, Mary MacKillop’s approach to education is shaping positive futures

Mary MacKillop College in Kensington is a vibrant, inclusive community where girls are encouraged to grow with confidence, compassion, and curiosity. Grounded in strong pastoral care and a commitment to academic excellence, Principal Sonia Nelson shares how the College nurtures young women to become their best selves.

Mary MacKillop’s legacy remains central to the college – how does her vision guide your approach to education today?

Mary MacKillop believed in the every person and the power of education to transform lives. That vision shapes everything we do – from inclusive classrooms to opportunities that nurture confidence, compassion and courage.

You recently lowered your fees for 2025, how does that decision reflect Mary MacKillop’s belief inaccessible education?

Mary MacKillop’s words, “Never see a need without doing something about it,” guided us. Families were feeling cost-of-living pressures, and we wanted to act decisively so more girls could access a MacKillop education without financial strain.

How has the community responded?

The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Parents have expressed gratitude and we have seen strong interest at our Principal’s Tours and Discover MacKillop Days. It reinforces that our community values fairness and inclusion.

Wellbeing is clearly a priority; how do you ensure each girl is known, nurtured, and supported?

We take a holistic approach. Every student is seen as an individual with unique gifts. Teachers, leaders and support staff work closely with students and families to build strong, trusting relationships.

MacKillop girls achieve impressive academic results, what drives that culture of excellence?

It begins with strong support, high expectations and expert teaching, but it is sustained by a belief that excellence looks different for every learner. We value persistence and growth alongside achievement, and we provide pathways – from STEM to the Arts – that allow girls to discover their strengths and aim high.

What are some standout programs that set your school apart?

Every girl has unique talents, and we make sure those strengths are nurtured. Our opportunities range from specialist programs like the Netball and Dance Academies to pathways that extend learning beyond the classroom, including Children’s University, university extension studies and VET courses supported by strong industry connections.

Looking to the future, how do you see the college continuing to honour its heritage?

Our heritage calls us to courage and compassion. We keep faith and service at the heart of learning while equipping MacKillop girls for the world – confident, capable and ready to lead with integrity.
