The philosophy of food as a means for connection, learning, and growth in early childhood education

As conversations around wellbeing continue to shift from reactive to proactive, early childhood education has followed suit – embracing a more holistic lens that honours every aspect of a child’s development. At Emali Early Learning Centre, this philosophy isn’t just embedded into programs and play; it’s infused into one of the most fundamental aspects of daily life: food. Here, nutrition is seen not merely as sustenance, but as an essential pillar of growth, connection, and learning.

Supporting babies as young as six weeks through to preschoolers, Emali’s holistic approach blends active learning, emotional wellbeing, community engagement and thoughtfully prepared meals to nurture the whole child. “Nutritious meals and snacks are recognised as essential for supporting children’s physical growth and their social, emotional and cognitive development,” the team shares – an ethos that shapes everything from menu design to mealtime rituals within each centre.

Each Emali centre prepares its meals fresh on-site every day, crafting seasonal menus tailored to suit children’s nutritional needs, allergies, intolerances, and cultural dietary preferences. This commitment to inclusivity and quality ensures every child is nourished with intention.

“Investing more into ensuring high-quality produce is a core focus at Emali,” says Senior Centre Director Natasha Pape. “The meals prepared for children within our centres are substantial and cater to each individual child’s nutritional, cultural and dietary requirements.”

The kitchen teams also embrace food as a sensory and cultural experience, offering a diverse range of flavours and textures. With families from many backgrounds sharing their cuisine and recipes, dishes become a celebration of community and identity, helping children develop adventurous palates and a sense of belonging. From fresh purées for infants to hearty, colourful meals for preschoolers, Emali ensures that every dish is rich in nutrients to support rapid brain and body development.

Emali’s food philosophy extends beyond nutrition to community support. Proudly South Australian, the centres prioritise partnerships with local suppliers such as Tony & Mark’s and Riviera Bakery.

“Our commitment to quality ensures fresh and nutritious food for the children,” says Tony & Mark’s Director, Paul Capobianco. “Tony & Mark’s is proud to support Emali and the community by providing the highest quality, locally grown produce from South Australian farmers.”

Riviera Bakery echoes this collaborative spirit. “We’ve crafted an exclusive bread range for Emali, ensuring the children receive the best fresh bread every day,” shares Managing Director Stuart Phillips. “It reflects our shared commitment to supporting the wellbeing of the Emali children and community.”

At Emali, mealtimes are far more than breaks in the day. They’re opportunities for learning, connection, and independence. Children practise social skills like sharing and conversation, develop autonomy by serving themselves and caring for their space, and experience cultural appreciation through diverse dishes.
