ShoSho
King William Road’s south end is crowned by ShoSho, the playful little sister to the city’s acclaimed Shōbōsho. Here, the mood is izakaya-style – the Japanese ‘stay-drink-place’ evoking the warmth of a best friend’s house: casual and always welcoming. Tempura is the star of the show, from green beans with salted yolk to oysters in smoked miso cream and yellowfin whiting with wasabi mayo. And, in true izakaya fashion, meals can be snackable or satiating. Hungry bellies are rewarded with Wagyu cheeseburgers with Japanese-inspired trimmings; grazers can meander through servings of tuna tataki, Laughing Cow shallot pancakes, and spicy beef and bamboo potstickers.

Nido
Few venues become synonymous with a single dish, but at Nido, the gnocco fritto, served with whipped ricotta, black pepper, and honey, has reached cult status. The experience here strikes a balance between cosy and cultivated: dishes deliver melt-in-your-mouth comfort, yet the emphasis on fresh, first-class ingredients ensures flavour is always at the forefront. Think saffron tagliarini with Moreton Bay bug and crayfish bisque or lamb ragu maccheroni verdi with fermented chilli.

Godi La Vita
Curly fettuccine cheese wheel pasta, flaming alla vodka pizza, pillowy bites of gnocchi topped with gooey raclette cheese – each course at Godi La Vita is an occasion. Since 2016, this King William Road favourite has been serving authentic flavours and genuine hospitality to the Hyde Park locale. Here, you can indulge in contemporary Italian fare – all tradition, made for modern palates. Think hand-stretched deep-pan pizza, market-fresh seafood spaghetti marinara and, of course, Godi La Vita’s signature cheese wheel pasta, where fettuccine or spaghetti is rolled through the gooey centre of a flame-lit cheese. And while the theatre of dining steals the spotlight, the restaurant’s true essence is simple: food, and the act of eating out, is all about enjoyment.

Bistro Français
Ask any chef who the godfathers of the culinary world are, and it’s likely you’ll be met with the same answer: the French. The meticulous technique, the emphasis on quality produce, the ability to transform simple ingredients into a moment – French cuisine has been the blueprint for flavour for centuries.
Finding Authentic French fare this side of the hemisphere can be a task. However, this is the niche Bistro Français has comfortably occupied for the better part of three years.
Opening along King William Road in 2022, the restaurant has been a go-to for the city’s food cognoscenti for good reason. “We bring tradition with a touch of indulgence, ” reflects the venue’s restaurateur, Baz Rampal, “while adding to the vibrant dining scene the street is already known for.”
The kitchen is helmed by French-born executive chef Fabien Streit, who is unravelling the idea that French food is fancy and complex with each flavour-forward dish. To him, it’s about showcasing that, at its core, the cuisine is honest and simple. This has manifested in courses rooted in tradition, reimagined for contemporary palates – think Burgundy snails doused with garlic and a herb butter (escargot de Bourgogne) or a rich, hearty duck confit cassoulet (cassoulet au confit de canard).
In part, Bistro Français’ success can also be pinned on the convivial vibe it as cultivated along King William Road. The team operates with the mindset that French food shouldn’t be reserved for special occasions. In turn, the restaurant feels like an extension of a Parisian family home – cosy, intimate, and stylish – where conversation is encouraged and fine wine flows freely. “We want every guest to feel like they’ve stepped into a neighbourhood bistro, ” continues Baz, “it’s a place where the service is personal, the atmosphere is relaxed yet elegant, and every detail is a celebration of French food and culture.” Sante!
