A property’s story is never ending. But in cases where houses and land are demanding evolution, a new solution in SA is pioneering a path forward. UH Projects – the development arm of leading design and build group, Urban Habitats – is driven by a desire to transform underutilised properties into homes fit for a generation that crave architectural excellence and functionality.

Case in point, the recently completed Malcolm Project brought to life a unique opportunity to revitalise a plot of land in the sought-after suburb of Millswood. An older property was successfully secured by UH Projects and demolished to create a blank canvas that held architectural potential. With 25 years of industry experience, Urban Habitats was then brought on board to design and build a home that blends elegance with Adelaide’s easy lifestyle. It wasn’t long before this promising development soon caught the eye of its future proprietor.

“The design concept was amazing,” says Malcolm’s new owner Derek. “Firstly, [UH Projects] presented a rare opportunity for a new build in the tightly-held suburb of Millswood, so location was a big tick. However, the most impressive [element] was how the design catered for the narrow block.”

Designing thoughtful houses that are well-constructed, easy to live in and eye-catching is what motivates Urban Habitats. For this home, the exterior’s sandy-coloured, textured stonework creates interest, while the high ceilings and large windows flood the spacious room with natural light. Smart land use was achieved through the development of a quaint side courtyard and details of Derek’s lifestyle were seamlessly blended into the final vision – just look to the swimming pool and adjoining pool house, fit with a golf simulator, for proof.

Collaboration is the core reason why Malcolm was a resounding success. The partnership between UH Projects and Urban Habitats ensured a coveted postcode was available for development; Derek’s involvement meant his budget and day-to-day needs were thoughtfully considered. Having Urban Habitats manage everything in-house – from the design and build, to the planning approvals, landscaping and styling – further fuelled what Derek describes as a “seamless” and “hugely positive” experience.

Of course, it helped to work with a design and build group with 25 years of experience. Because of this, Derek felt he could place his trust in the extended UH team, understanding that everyone was working towards a collective outcome. “It helped to know Urban Habitats’ reputation for quality,” he says. “Right from the outset, they had a clear vision for the home. The attention to detail was unwavering, too – all aspects of the build had been considered. It was very rewarding to see it come to life.”

The partnership between UH Projects and Urban Habitats marks an exciting chapter for the business as they celebrate their quarter-century in the industry. Together, they hope to set a new benchmark for what’s achievable in property design and development in Adelaide. And with the stunning completion of the Malcolm Project, it’s easy to see how they will set a fresh precedent.
