The expertly crafted Hartzer Building, incorporating a dance studio, gymnasium and classrooms, at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College (OLSH) is a purposefully built space designed specifically for girls. Here, carefully selected design elements, chosen to enhance learning and wellbeing, merge to create a space where students feel engaged, comfortable and confident. Advancing the school’s ethos to create spaces where girls learn best, the building, opened in January 2024, does just that, promoting creativity, openness and empowerment, and celebrating the unique potential of every girl.

Creating a space specifically for girls in Years 7–12 was a central part of the brief to architectural firm, DesignInc. While the new facility obviously needed to be a functional learning space, catering to the needs of the 500-plus students, it also needed to represent the values of the all-girl Catholic College.

In response, DesignInc’s proposal centred around four key elements –rhythm, illuminate, confidence and inclusivity – and the incorporation of these elements was pivotal to ensuring the centre is a space where girls will thrive. Rhythmic design elements, including repeating patterns and a range of textures, were chosen to create a visually engaging environment, encouraging movement and creativity. ‘Illuminate’ is represented by natural light, visible through multi-level windows, and open spaces that promote connectivity and wellbeing. ‘Confidence’ represents the buildings clear, unobstructed views and easy- to-follow paths, allowing students to feel comfortable, safe and ready to reach new limits. Inclusivity ensures a warm and welcoming environment, where a variety of accessible programs and events can be held, encouraging opportunity and acceptance within a diverse, multicultural community.

Nothing here has been overlooked. The materials, colours, and aesthetic were carefully chosen, with equal attention given to ensuring its practicality. The centre’s gymnasium, Sacré Coeur, features premium sports equipment, dividing nets and retractable glass basketball backboards for an unobstructed space. Tiered retractable seating accommodates both large and small gatherings, while large LED screens and sound systems support presentations and create a dynamic environment.

The impressive Dance Studio gives life to girls’ creativity, self expression, imagination and confidence across all year levels and dance experience.

More than just a sporting space, the Hartzer Building is designed to support both mental and physical development. OLSH College’s Principal, Maria Urbano, says, “Hartzer is a hub for sports, learning, assemblies and community events, while fostering teamwork, resilience and confidence. Its seamless integration with outdoor courts encourages movement and connection, reinforcing the importance of wellbeing in a modern, girl-centred education. It’s a space where girls can continue to develop their potential, whether they’re celebrating achievements, building relationships or pursuing new challenges.”

What’s more, the College will also open a new performing arts theatre in the coming years, complete with professional- grade lighting, sound systems and backstage facilities. Adjacent Hartzer, the theatre will house music suites, performing arts classrooms and spaces for set design and costumes. “Hartzer is just the beginning,” says Principal Urbano. “It builds on over 70 years of OLSH College’s rich history, laying the foundation for a lifelong love for learning.”
