Get to know the founder of Advanced Cosmetic Medicine

You’ve been in business for eight years, but before that you were
a general practitioner – what drew you to aesthetic medicine?

Aesthetic or cosmetic medicine has always been something I’ve had
a personal interest in. As a GP, I was drawn to helping all types of people improve their health and wellbeing, and I even spent time working for the United Nations in war-torn countries as the Deputy Chief Medical Officer. Over time, I realised that cosmetic medicine offered a unique blend of science, artistry and the patient care aspect, which I had always enjoyed. In 2016, I craved a lifestyle change for not just myself, but for my husband and young family. This is when I made the decision to lean into my passion of cosmetic medicine and opened my private clinic, Advanced Cosmetic Medicine, in North Adelaide.

Your experience is vast and patients are reassured by your level of expertise. Why is this so important?

After being in this industry for over 20 years, I am fortunate to have the advantage of life experience. I have seen cosmetic trends come and go, and I have witnessed first-hand the medical advancements in this industry. As a cosmetic physician, I know a big part of my job is to reassure my patients they are in safe hands and to ensure they are comfortable. Many of my patients come to me with insecurities or a sense of vulnerability. When consulting with patients in a delicate or vulnerable situation, it motivates me to ensure they are receiving the best treatment possible. In Australia, we are also fortunate that our TGA (Therapeutic Good Association) is one of the strictest in the world, so our industry is constantly monitored and held to a high standard of care.

What is the number one skin concern patients come to you with?

I would say skin laxity, which is when the skin loses collagen and elasticity (a common sign of ageing) and results in a sagging or drooping appearance.

There has been a sizeable shift toward non-surgical anti-ageing in recent years. What is the most effective non-invasive skin tightening treatment that you offer?

This is very true. A consultation would be required to determine which skin tightening treatment would be most ideal, based on skin laxity and skin type. Two of our most popular facial skin tightening devices include the Ultraformer lll, which uses high-intensity focused ultrasound to stimulate collagen production and lift sagging skin, and Venus Viva MD, which combines radiofrequency and micro-needling technology to improve both skin texture and firmness, especially around the eyes.

Aesthetic medicine is constantly evolving with new techniques offering patients more choice than ever before. Regenerative medicine is relatively new – what regenerative aesthetic procedures are available at Advanced Cosmetic Medicine?

The regenerative procedures we offer include Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), which is a treatment where a patient’s blood is drawn, processed to concentrate the platelets and then injected into the skin to promote healing and stimulate collagen production, and Rejuran, which is the newest bio-remodelling treatment we offer. It uses polynucleotides derived from salmon DNA to promote skin repair, improve elasticity and reduce signs of ageing by stimulating collagen production and healing damaged tissue. We also offer Profhilo (a skin treatment that uses a high concentration of hyaluronic acid to hydrate and rejuvenate the skin, improve elasticity and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles), and Exosome Therapy (exosomes are tiny, cell-derived particles rich in growth factors that
are applied topically to the skin for skin rejuvenation and healing).

What would you say is the biggest misconception people have about aesthetic medicine?

I think the biggest misconception is that cosmetic procedures are always obvious or lead to an ‘overdone’ appearance. However, the reality is that in the current climate it’s very much about subtle, personalised tweaks or treatments designed to enhance your natural features, as opposed to dramatically altering your appearance.
