Nationally celebrated but accessible to all, Marryatville High School’s music curriculum and special interest music centre are world-leading by design, says head of music Mat Noble.

Music is an instinctive part of our human experience,” says Marryatville High School’s Head of Music, Mat Noble, when reflecting on why he considers music a pivotal part of a child’s education. “Researchers continue to document the benefits music education offers us as connected people.”
Since 1976, the leading public secondary school has been at the forefront of developing the next generation of talent through its globally recognised Special Interest Music centre and dedication to providing students with a dynamic range of pathways that supports all skill levels, interests and genres. Now at the helm of the music department, Mat is focused on continuing Marryatville High School’s legacy of nurturing some of the brightest minds.
The elective music pathway is well- rounded and future focused. From Year 7 to 10, everyday class topics explore digital music creation, songwriting and compositional techniques for classical and contemporary genres, while also encouraging collaborative learning. SACE Stage 1 and 2 subjects dig deeper into performance, creative expression and musical literacy. Further, students can become involved in choirs, jazz bands, concert bands, orchestras and smaller ensembles dedicated to orchestral, wind and percussion instruments. This is delivered in purpose-built classrooms and rehearsal spaces featuring the latest music resources.
What’s more, every music faculty member is actively involved in the industry. Not only will your child receive a leading education, but they’ll be armed with real-world knowledge, too. “Our staff’s experience, passion and expertise are our greatest resources,” says Mat. “Their willingness to share their diversity of talents and knowledge with our students is exceptional.”
However, where the school shines is its award-winning Special Interest Music centre and program. The institution is one of four in South Australia to offer the expanded, multifaceted curriculum that sharpens students’ craft and develops industry pathways. “It’s designed to provide a place for young people who share a passion for music and wish to engage in the multitude of advantages in all aspects of study and wellbeing,” says Mat.

After auditions, accepted students will strengthen their choral, orchestral, solo and ensemble skills through elevated classes and extra-curricular options. Students will also receive 10 weekly lessons (from Years 7 to 10), expanding their musical development (theory/aural), composition, score reading and confidence.
Initiatives from the program are recognised nationally, too. In 2024,
the school’s Karra Voices choir received second place at the World Choir Games in New Zealand and the Baroque ensemble was the only SA team at the National Chamber Music competition in Melbourne. These prestigious titles, coupled with the leading curriculum, saw Marryatville High School win the Adelaide Eisteddfod Society’s Excellence Award for the second year running!
However, delivering quality education to every child is the biggest driver for the public secondary school. Sustained by the support of Principal Julie Ferguson, the leading staff and future- ready curriculum ensure students develop lifelong skills in subject areas that truly interest them – particularly music, which further advances wellbeing, resilience, organisation and academic excellence.
“It must be available to every child – and Marryatville shines at this,” says Mat. “This leads to holistic education, which extends into all aspects of life and learning.”
