Celebrating 30 years in the area this November, the one-stop-shop – which started as a family-run fruit and vegetable market in the 1960s – has transformed into a go-to hub for fresh, local produce.

Today, the market is still a family affair. Brothers Luke and Michael Schinella are at the helm of the business, carrying on the legacy their Nonno Michele started when he opened a fruit and veg store in Broken Hill after migrating from Southern Italy. The Schinellas relocated to Adelaide in 1985, before moving to their current day site on Prospect Road in 1994.

Ambitious and ahead of the curve, the family has continued to evolve its market floor to reflect the needs of its customers. It’s now open seven days a week and has been upgraded to include an artisan continental bakery, florist, traditional Italian deli and fully commercial kitchen, where five chefs curate a lineup of take-home meals, salads and heat-and-eat options. There’s even a team of Italian pastry chefs on site!

Luke and Michael credit part of the market’s popularity to the resident butcher, who stocks some of the best quality meats in SA. But if you can’t find what you’re looking for, just let the brothers know. “If we don’t have it, we’ll source it or make it,” they say. “We are a hands-on family operated business [and] completely customer focused – we try to look after our customers every need.”

People are also the heartbeat of the market. Schinella’s pays it forward where they can, supporting local schools, charities and organisations through donating various goods and services.
