As Bowerbird celebrates 15 years in November, the market reflects on how it’s paved the way for a close-knit design community that champions some of the brightest Australian talent.

For 15 years, Bowerbird has been a hotbed for creative talent, providing a much-needed space for artisans to showcase their work in an immersive, meet-the-maker setting. From November 22 to 24,
the leading design market is celebrating its impact and influence in South Australia’s creative community at the Adelaide Showground.
Bowerbird began in 2009 when jewellery designer Jane Barwick noticed a gap in the market for an event where artisans could interact face-to-face with customers while mingling with other creatives. It’s since blossomed into a biannual must-attend event with over 150 stalls in May and November.
Today, artisans from all over Australia travel to participate in Bowerbird. In SA, it’s also quickly built a reputation for being the place to source individualised, quality-made products for a curated life. However, for makers – from distillers to designers and more – it’s an opportunity to cut their teeth.
“Being from Melbourne, Bowerbird is the only place in SA where you can purchase my products,” says Samantha Avery from independent fashion line, The Wolf and I. The sustainable label debuted at the market in 2011. “It was a huge success! It’s so lovely to be surrounded by like-minded small businesses.”
Local jewellery maker Anja Jagsch agrees. She’s been at Bowerbird since 2017. “My brand has grown in the last seven years and Bowerbird has played a significant role,” she says. “It’s lovely to meet my customers in person. Many wholesale and consignment contracts have been made through my attendance at Bowerbird.”
Both The Wolf and I and Anja Jagsch will be at the November event alongside other artisans such as artist Claire Ishino, homewares brand Morph & Mould and holistic beauty label Oz Indulgence. There’s also an opportunity to sample and purchase produce from makers like Cuvée-Co Wines, Salt Gang and Taronga Almonds.
Bowerbird’s current owner, Peggy Byrne, purchased the market in 2020. To her, the markets are about inspiring artisans while fostering a supportive small business community. “[Bowerbird] gives designers energy and purpose and that’s why they do this,” she says. “There’s so much benefit from being in a room full of people as creative and inspired as you.”
As Peggy looks towards the next 15 years of Bowerbird, she hopes the market can continue to be a launchpad for artisans’ careers while developing new avenues for growth, such as a mentorship program. “At Bowerbird, you’re guaranteed quality and something unique that you’ll cherish,” she says. “I’d love Bowerbird to be seen as an institution that designers use to test themselves and to grow.”
The next Bowerbird takes place in the Wayville Pavilion at the Adelaide Showground on November 22 to 24.
