In Right Now: Wool + Wood

Renewable, practical and aesthetic – the team from All Space Flooring tell us about the sizable shift toward flooring choices that are both sustainably conscious and well-being focused.

Spaces that are inspired by nature are at the forefront of current architectural and interior trends. Tonal colours, biophilic design, tactile, textural and handcrafted interiors are making a comeback, and at the centre of it all is the desire for the products within our homes to be sustainable, renewable, functional and beautiful.

1. Solid timber

Solid timber has always been a timeless choice with long-lasting appeal. It’s hard wearing, practical and, importantly, if sourced from sustainably managed forests, it’s sustainable. Timber is one of the most renewable
building materials – it can literally be grown again and again. Wood is also able to store carbon, which can then help to offset the emissions that are used during the manufacturing process.

2. Engineered timber

Once the poor cousin to solid timber, engineered timber is now having a moment. It boasts the same aesthetic, long-lasting appeal as solid timber but it’s composition (it’s made up of 70 percent repurposed materials) means that it uses less waste and fewer trees. The core of engineered timber uses fast-growing wood or a high-density fibreboard made from recovered wood.

3. Wool

Carpets are making a comeback and play a crucial role in creating a warm, welcoming space. Renewable and biodegradable, wool decomposes naturally once disposed of, slowly releasing valuable nutrients back in the earth. This makes it one of the best sustainable additions to your home. Wool is also a great choice for those who suffer from allergies – it’s hypoallergenic, which means it is non-conducive to the growth of bacteria, mould and mildew. It also deters the growth of dust mites, which is the most common single cause of asthma.

THE RIGHT FIT

Choosing the right flooring for your home is important, but so too is choosing the right trained, qualified and licensed providers. Also make sure that your provider is adequately insured and has the relevant industry experience for your
particular project.
