Interior designer, Markus Hamence, is helping South Australians unlock their creative potential and apply it to any home project through TAFE SA’s Introduction to Interior Decoration.

There are some things a natural sense of style can’t teach you when it comes to interior design, and that’s where TAFE SA’s Introduction to Interior Decoration comes into play.
Led by industry expert Markus Hamence – the brains behind former furniture and homeware stores BlackCherry and Louis Bond – the eight-week short course is curated to help you turn any dream home project into reality through lessons in colour, texture and light.
Combining his more than 20 years of real world experience with the structure and tools available at TAFE SA, the lecturer says the course “introduces students to what is involved in the industry.”
“We share tips, tricks and many tools of the trade,” he says. “It’s a very good teaser for those who wish to get into a new career or follow a burning passion. Many students from the short course end up coming through [TAFE SA] for the Certi fi cate IV in Interior Decoration and/ or the Diploma of Interior Design.”
Classes are structured to mimic the process interior designers follow. “We are very much in touch with the industry,” Markus explains. “I believe that is what sets TAFE SA apart.”
Delivered in-person at the Tonsley campus or virtually, the introductory course skills students in how to mix and match colour with texture and pattern, and how to develop a sense of style that can be adapted to fit briefs.
“Good design should always be about functionality, practicality and matching it with the client’s personality. It’s not always about current trends.”

The importance of constructing mood, sample and material boards is also a major focus of the eight-week program, encouraging students to visualise their design ideas tangibly. “Nothing can happen in this game without presenting some form of a board,” Markus says.
“They are a very important tool for delivery and there’ll never be a [project] where it is not a required element.”
However, it is Markus’ insider knowledge and current connection to the industry that sets the TAFE SA course apart – students are directly fed up-to-date and evolving practices from a leader in the South Australian interior scene.
“The thrill of being able to share my knowledge garnered by working as an interior designer is a joy,” he says. “It’s important for students to study and learn from a lecturer who remains relevant in the industry. This way, students will have knowledge that is [reflective of] what is occurring in the crazy world of design!”
