Spring racing season officially kicks off this weekend! In preparation for Derby Day at Morphettville Racecourse this Saturday and Melbourne Cup on November 7, we look at some style trends to keep an eye on trackside.
Statement Silhouettes
Statement silhouettes, like ruffled skirts, dresses and puff sleeves, are making a comeback in a big way! According to one of Morphettville Racecourse’s Fashion on the Field Derby Day judge, Markus Hamence, tailoring and silhouettes are worth gold this season. Judges will also look for the clever use of colours and patterns, and how a piece fits the body. For those seeking a classically feminine silhouette, consider ruching and wrap designs to cinch the waist and elongate the legs. To fully embrace your femininity, opt for dresses adorned with bow detailing or choose a one-shoulder design, like this stunning silk linen blue violet dress which you can find at Witchery at Rundle Place. ACCENTUATE WITH ACCESSORIES
Accessories like chunky gold jewellery (Gerard McCabe’s oval trace link bracelet or Mist Jewellery’s twist gold-plated choker are two personal faves) oversized sunnies, embellished gloves and statement handbags, and of course, fascinators can make your outfit pop. Colour is in, too. When dealing with a single, solid block colour in your outfit, think about introducing some flair with colour blocked accessories. You can keep it monochromatic by selecting accessories that match with the colour of your dress. Alternatively, you can go for a striking contrast by pairing your outfit with accessories in a different hue. If you’re wearing a vibrant hot pink dress, consider incorporating cobalt blue shoes and a clutch to create an eye-catching and dynamic ensemble.

androgynous ensembles
Tailored suits in vivid hues, striking patterns, and unique textures have become increasingly popular for female racegoers. Exude a slightly more masculine charm by donning fitted pants or playsuits. For those with taller, curvier figures, opting for a high-waisted, wide-leg trouser and blazer combination is a sophisticated choice. The high waistline serves to put your height in the spotlight by directing the eye downward, while the wide-leg trousers flatters curves. We’re loving Elle & Elka’s Piper pant and jacket in blue (below, middle). Crafted from a soft linen Tencel, the Piper Pant will take your suiting look to a new level.

FASHION ON THE FIELD
Of course, it wouldn’t be a day at the races without the classic 2023 Croser Fashion on the Field competition at Morphettville Racecourse this Saturday. This year, Derby Day’s monochrome palette will be judged in two new categories, with contestants competing for the ‘Best Dressed’ and ‘Best Suiting’ on the day. Style queen Lauren Dilena will return to Morphettvile Racecourse to MC the 2023 Croser Fashion on the Field event, with the formal judging panel featuring The Advertiser’s Anna Vlach, Damian Porcaro and Markus Hamence. Winners will receive $500 cash, a Petaluma Cellar Door Sparkling Flight and regional platter for four and a $100 Westfield gift card. There’ll be prizes for runners-up, too.
