Flower Power

Looking for a career that allows your creativity to flourish? TAFE SA’s Certificate III in Floristry [SFL30115] is the start to a bright and blossoming future.

Whether it’s gifting a birthday bouquet or a bunch of roses on Valentine’s Day, TAFE SA Floristry Lecturer, Kathy Pollard, has long appreciated the power and beauty of flowers.

“My grandma inspired me and introduced me to church posies when I was about four years old,” Kathy says.

“I saw how profound the art of giving flowers was. Since then, it has become a part of me and my life’s passion.”

Kathy’s love for floral led her to TAFE SA where she teaches a Certificate III in Floristry alongside co-lecturer, Lisa Cimmino, at the Currie Street campus’ purpose-built floristry studio.

“The [studio] simulates a real floristry environment,” says Lisa. The beautiful space features wet areas, fridges, individual workspaces and state-of-the-art technology.

As the only registered training provider in Adelaide that offers a certificate recognised across Australia, TAFE SA is the perfect place to start a career in this creative field, helping students learn how to make beautiful hand tied and wired arrangements, as well as learn about different varieties of flowers and plants, and to gain real-world experience.

At the end of the 12-month course, Kathy and Lisa say graduates are not only equipped with the skills needed to gain employment in the industry, but have also often gained specialised skills in particular areas of interest.

Certificate III in Floristry student, Vanessa Teusner, is a self-confessed lover of nature and has honed her skills creating bunches and bouquets that are sculptural with interesting colour palettes, textures and compositions.

“[I love floristry] for its artistic beauty and ability to enhance our own lives,” Vanessa says. “Working with flowers is creative, utilising sight, touch and smell.”

Vanessa was looking to re-enter the workforce and was seeking a study/life balance around family, so the flexibility of the course appealed to her.

Her other ‘family’ – her “TAFE SA flower family” – allows her to build a future in a supportive environment with an “inspiring bunch” of like-minded people.

“I can visualise myself working in a beautiful retail space, surrounded by flowers and foliage,” she says.
