We chat to Lifestyle Medical’s Dr Katina Koukourou about new treatments and skincare misconceptions.

What is the biggest skincare complaint your clients have?
The most common complaint is people “looking tired”. This can be sagging skin due to loss of volume and bone recession, as well as dull, dry, lined or pigmented skin.
What treatments do women ask for the most?
The most common treatment I perform is facial volumising and improving wrinkles around the forehead and eyes. This combination of treatments is helpful in reducing and preventing that tired look. Replacing facial volume with dermal fillers and restoring the facial shape with either dermal fillers or facial threads can achieve the desired lifted and youthful oval shaped face. Wrinkle relaxants are used to smooth the skin.
What is the biggest misconception around anti-ageing treatments?
One of the biggest misconceptions around injectable anti-ageing treatments is that you will look unnatural and people will be able to tell you have had work done. This isn’t necessarily the case at all. Aesthetics definitely shouldn’t be about a one size fits all approach. A carefully mapped treatment plan looks at the ageing face as a whole. A skilled practitioner can target individual areas with a balanced approach using specific proportions and amounts to create a restored appearance, not necessarily an enhanced appearance.
Another misconception is that if you start injectable anti-ageing treatments and then stop you will end up looking worse than you did before you started. The muscles may seem weaker initially, but over time they will re-build. With regard to filler, skin is generally elastic and will restore to normal if and when you decide to stop treatments.
What new treatments should people try and why?
A new treatment we have are facial threads. This is an alternative or an adjunct to dermal fillers. It is something to perhaps consider if you have particular concerns about facial sagging.
